An antique Orthodox icon cross, used as a standalone icon, depicts the Crucifixion of Christ and the interceding saints. It is covered in a bright "fire gilding," lending the bronze cross a sparkling and festive appearance. The reverse side is decorated with a floral motif. Circa 1860 - 1890. Another name for the cross is "The Crucifixion of Christ with Interceding Saints." The eight-pointed cross features the Crucifixion of Christ in the center, with the sun and moon depicted at the ends of the middle crossbar. At the top is the Image of the Savior Not Made by Hands. The lower part depicts the city of Jerusalem, Mount Golgotha, and the head of Adam. The interceding saints are depicted. On the left panel are the Mother of God and Saint Martha, while on the right panel are the Apostle John the Theologian and the martyr Longinus the Centurion. The cross is intended for home prayer and can be perceived as a standalone icon of the Crucifixion of Christ. Such crosses were either installed in a home iconostasis or attached to a room wall.
