Lot 0252: TERRACOTTA POLAR BEAR SCULPTURE BY MARGOT KEMPE

A modernist terracotta polar bear sculpture by Margot Kempe, 1898 to 1981, a German-American sculptor. The sculpture depicts a polar bear standing on its hind legs. Raised on a rectangular wooden base. Signed by Kempe on the hind leg. A paper label inscribed, Margo Kempe, attached to the bottom. Fleeing from the Nazis, the family of Margot Kempe went to South America, living in Ecuador for nine years. There she successfully worked and exhibited, coming to NYC in 1947, where she started working in ceramic as well as stone and wood. Exhibited: PAFA Ann., 1960; Detroit IA; Syracuse Mus. FA; Univ.
