He graduated from the Stroganov Moscow State University of Arts and Industry in 1915 and later enrolled at VKhUTEMAS, where he studied under Wassily Kandinsky and Vladimir Favorsky. Tarkhanovs pieces are part of the permanent collections at the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian State Museum, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, and the Getty Center.
