Lot 0231: SOUTHEAST ASIAN BRONZE SEATED BUDDHA ON FIGURAL PEDESTAL
A Southeast Asian bronze seated Buddha on an elaborate figural pedestal, probably Thailand or Cambodia, 17th–18th century. Hollow-cast with rich aged patina and verdigris, showing the Buddha in a teaching gesture above an openwork base with kneeling atlas figure and mythical beasts. Surface wear and oxidation consistent with age; no apparent modern repairs. Cast in bronze, the Buddha is shown seated in vajrāsana on a stepped plinth, the hands raised in a teaching or devotional gesture (vitarka / dharmachakra-related mudra). The figure displays a serene expression with downcast eyes, elongated earlobes, and tightly curled hair surmounted by a rounded ushnisha, characteristic of late Ayutthaya–early Rattanakosin or related Khmer-influenced regional production. The Buddha is supported on an elaborate openwork pedestal incorporating a central kneeling atlas figure flanked by stylised mythical beasts, possibly lions or makara-derived creatures, symbolically bearing the sacred weight of the Enlightened One. The underside reveals a hollow-cast interior with a central aperture, consistent with Southeast Asian lost-wax casting traditions and ritual bronzes intended for temple or domestic shrine use. The surface retains a rich, naturally developed dark brown to olive patina with areas of malachite encrustation, reflecting age, ritual handling, and long-term oxidation. The sculptural modelling, figural base, and iconographic details suggest a work produced for devotional rather than export purposes.
