Lot 0241: RARE QING HORSESHOE-BACK FOLDING ARMCHAIR QUANYI (圈椅)
Late Qing dynasty to early Republic period (c. 1880–1920) Chinese brass-mounted Padouk folding horseshoe-back armchair, presented in excellent antique condition with an attractive, well-developed patina throughout. The chair features a shaped and pierced central splat, combining openwork and relief carving with auspicious motifs, and a carved front rail. The carving remains crisp and intact, indicating upper-tier workshop craftsmanship rather than later export production. Constructed with a folding X-frame, the crossed legs and original hinged structure confirm that this piece was intentionally designed as a folding chair, not later altered. Folding horseshoe-back armchairs of this complexity are significantly rarer than fixed quanyi examples. The chair retains its original brass mounts and corner straps, applied at key stress points including the crest rail joints, legs, and base rails. These mounts are both functional and decorative, and are characteristic of late Qing to early Republic period portable furniture. The brass shows natural oxidation and age-consistent patination, with no signs of artificial distressing or modern replacement. An integrated footrest platform with a decorative edge is present, a luxury feature often omitted from lower-grade examples. The footrest is structurally sound and securely attached. The hardwood frame displays honest wear at joints and contact points, consistent with age and use. Surface wear aligns with genuine historical handling rather than later factory aging. No active woodworm or structural instability is observed. Wood appears consistent with Padouk or northern hardwood, darkened through age and polish; possibly a hongmu-category substitute, but not zitan. Overall, a well-preserved, structurally sound example, retaining original surfaces, fittings, and desirable patina. Purchased from a local Chinese family in Brisbane. Literature provided by the family.
