Lot 0141: ITALIAN GILT BRONZE SCULPTURE AFTER GIORGIO DE CHIRICO
A gold patinated bronze sculpture, Gladiator, after Giorgio De Chirico, Italian, Greek, French, 1888 to 1978. Mounted on a rectangular shaped base. Signed with etching, G. De Chirico, on the base. Titled with engraving on the base. Inscribed, Je Trovatore, on the front of the base. Marked with a Fonderia Cavallari Roma mark, on the backside of the base. Giuseppe Maria Alberto Giorgio de Chirico was an Italian artist and writer born in Greece. In the years before World War I, he founded the scuola metafisica art movement, which profoundly influenced the surrealists, with Carlo Carra and Giorgio Morandi, founded the style of Metaphysical painting. De Chirico would also place odd mannequins and other enigmatic objects in his compositions, juxtaposing them in odd relationships and sizes, often using overt triads of colors like yellow red and green to reinforce their iconic presence, as in The Disquieting Muses.
