A pair of antique 19th century French Empire style patinated and gilt bronze ewers in the manner of Claude Galle, 1758 to 1815. The dark, matte finish of the bodies provides a sharp contrast to the bright, polished gold accents. The most striking feature is the tall, slender handles shaped like mythical winged creatures. At the base of each handle, there is a small gilt-bronze mask, resembling Bacchus, which serves as an ornamental anchor. The shoulders and bases of the ewers are decorated with gilt-leaf motifs, reinforcing the neoclassical theme. Claude Galle was one of the foremost bronziers and fondeur-ciseleurs of the late Louis XVI and Empire periods. He supplied noble residencies in France and Italy.
