A fascinating carved amethyst quartz finial or amulet, executed in the Grand Tour taste and dating to the 19th century. The piece is carved in the round as a Janus-form (double-faced) head featuring Bacchic motifs: one side depicts a bearded and horned Satyr or Silenus, while the reverse depicts a stylized lion or panther mask. The hair and mane are rendered with linear and cross-hatched incisions. The top of the head features a central drilled mounting hole. In the manner/style of Greco-Roman antiquity.
