An antique Japanese, Meiji era, bronze incense burner. The Japanese bronze koro is cast in the form of a uchide no kozuchi, or lucky mallet, traditionally associated with the deity Daikokuten. The vessel features a removable lid surmounted by a cast mouse finial, while the body is decorated with pierced openwork panels of scrolling foliage to allow for the release of incense smoke. The piece is finished with a deep brown-black patina characteristic of late nineteenth-century metalwork.
