A historical and bibliophilic work, The Modern Book Cover, Sovremennaya oblozhka, written by the renowned Russian art historian and critic Erich Fyodorovich Gollerbakh. The book was published in Leningrad in 1927 by the Publishing House of the Academy of Arts. The design of this cover, as well as the original title page illustrations, drop caps, and tailpieces in the book, were created by the renowned graphic artist Alisiy Nikolayevich Leo, A. N. Leo. Gollerbakhs work was the first large scale attempt to interpret and systematize the so called Golden Age of Soviet book illustration in the 1920s. The book offers a detailed theoretical analysis and includes 75 reproductions of the finest cover designs created by the eras leading masters among them Alexander Benois, Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, Boris Kustodiev, Georgy Narbut, Sergei Chekhonin, and others.
