Vladimir Grigorovich, Russian, American, 1939 to 2023, an oil painting on canvas, Bazaar, 1982. Signed, dated and titled on verso. Born in Moscow in 1939, Vladimir Grigorovich emigrated to the United States in 1975 after several years in Israel. His work reflects a unique dialogue between Soviet visual culture and the American artistic environment in which he continued his career. In Bazaar, Grigorovich depicts a market facade as a rhythmic arrangement of shutters, doors, panels, and muted planes of color. Pale greens, dusty yellows, soft pinks, and gray-blue tones create a surface that appears both weathered and luminous. The architectural elements remain recognizable, yet their simplified geometry and painterly texture bring the composition close to abstraction. The absence of figures gives the closed bazaar a suspended, almost timeless quality. Through worn surfaces, softened outlines, and subtle variations of color, Grigorovich evokes the atmosphere of a place marked by daily activity but captured in a moment of stillness.
