An antique 19th century fine gilt bronze figure depicting Salammbo, the legendary Carthaginian priestess immortalized in Gustave Flauberts celebrated historical novel. Executed by the noted French sculptor Jean Garnier, 1853 to 1910, the sculpture portrays the exotic heroine standing with arms dramatically outstretched above a ceremonial flame. Created during the height of the French Orientalist movement, the work displays Garniers accomplished modeling and attention to detail, particularly in the treatment of the flowing drapery, elaborate hairstyle, and expressive facial features. The composition captures the theatrical and romantic spirit that made the subject of Salammbô highly popular in French art of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
